Column: Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic - 'Welcome to the Megaman Solid'

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games.]

Following his triumphant comeback comic, Persona again graces us with his 'unique' worldview. This time, it's the classic Mega Man franchise, but seen through a distinctly Kojima-esque lens. Snaaaake!

[Also, bonus marks for anyone who uses the comments to explain the comic to the less lore-intensive among beloved GSW readers.]

I'm you! I'm your prototype!!

Absolutely brilliant!

Great work, very funny.

I don't get who Airman is parodying though, or what he's parodying. If I'm correct, all of these are references to the original metal Gear Solid, meaning that a 2 or 3 version of this comic may be appearing in the future. Hmm, am I right :).

here's my long winded, kind-of-bad explanation.

Basically megaman is a cyborg (best way to explain it without going too deep?) from a world of constant fighting between different types of bots. The comic places him, his enemies and a rival/nemesis/major opponent into metal gEar solid roles.

Each of the robots comments are either puns or funny adaptations of pieces of dialogue orissues from metal Gear Solid. For example, Numberman replaces Psycho mantis from the original game. Psycho Mantis could read what games were saved on your memory card, but read them off to you in a way that amde it seem as if a video ame character could actually read your mind. That pose he strikes is brilliant and very reminescent of the actual Psycho mantis (I hope I didn't mess up his anme again).

Auto-con replaces Meryl (actually, I think that's wrong, i forgot who it is), a female soldier who ponders the same question in-game. As the robot looks male, it's a double whammy homosexual joke on Megaman.

protoman obviously replaces Liquid Snake, Solid Snakes practical twin brother from metal gear Solid. They both were cloned from the original soldier known as "Naked Snake". As whiny admits above, one of them received all of the reessive genes, but it wasn't him. He's made to think so in the game. It's even funnier because they're robots. (I hate calling them robots over and over, but it's the ebst way to explain to non-Megaman fans).

gametaku got it mostly right.

Just some addenda and corrections:

Snake Man's quote is a parody of Vulcan Raven's "Crawl on the ground like the Snake you are!". One of Mega-Man's signature moves is, of course, his back slide*.

Airman is Revolver Ocelot: "There are no continues, my friend." The E-Can (E-Tank?) is an item in Mega Man that refills your energy. There actually are continues in Metal Gear Solid, the only exception being the part of the game where Ocelot says that to you.

Yaranaika is a 4chan meme (look it up yourself). Don't know how this one maps to Metal Gear Solid, though. FOXDIE?

Auto-Con is Otacon (your nerdy sidekick): "Do you think that love can bloom, even on the battlefield?"

Metal Man REX = Metal Gear REX (giant robot you fight)

The original soldier Solid and Liquid were cloned from, Naked Snake, is better known as Big Boss.

Auto-Con = Otacon.
He asks the love question after falling for an enemy sniper. Otacon is a support guy and kind of a useless wuss, just like Auto!

Number Man = Psycho Mantis.
Both like to make predictions, the former from mathematical probability computation, the other through "telepathy" (reading your save data, hence the Breath of Fire reference).

Snake Man = Vulcan Raven. Both have easily noticable animal motifs (VR actually has huge raven tattoos). The line as well has the choice of Robot Master is a play off the original quote, "Crawl on the ground like the snake you are!"

Metal Man = Metal Gear Rex.

Airman = Revolver Ocelot.
Not sure about the choice, but the quote is a play of the original, "There are no continues, my friend," which Ocelot explains during a part on MGS when he is torturing you. And indeed, in that very small part of the game, if you die, You CAN'T continue from the Game Over screen!

Crash Man = Ninja/Grey Fox.
This is a tenuous prediction on my part, but I'll step you through it. The quote, "Yaranaika?" isn't from MGS, but from a homoerotic manga (wiki it if you must), and means roughly "Well then, shall we do it?" The character with lines most similar to that is Grey Fox/Ninja, an old soldier rival of Solid Snake that was cybernetically rebuilt after death. When you fight him, he says some questionable soldier bonding stuff, like "That's it, Snake. Hurt me more. Make me feel alive again!"

The Crash Man/Gray Fox thing makes a lot of sense, but there's a shorter explanation: it's a reference to a viral video that's been making the rounds recently: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LdzjVnH9YoY

It's obvious that Persona-Sama wished to discuss the obvious homoeroticism denial of Megaman in his games with this reference. Each traditional Megaman game featured six or eight enemy bosses with "Man" as part of their name; even the robot bosses with feminine traits (Plant Man, who was a giant flower) are rendered as men. Megaman hunts down and kills these men to deny the feelings he holds for his own sex, his only consolation that he touches them--of so briefly--to gain their power. Megaman will never know love, but he becomes stronger as he learns new techniques from his defeated would-be lovers.

My favorite part was the drawings!

I love how this brings out all the uber-nerditude!

Thanks, guys, this has been an educative experience for me, actually!

Emotion and luck are something that can be very important when it comes to video games. A really great game can leave you with the best feeling inside.

@TOLLMASTER: Oh, I knew about the phrase's memelife already. But seeing as every other "casting" choice had a logical reason behind it, it still stands to reason that the snake/ninja homoerotic subtext is still the main reason.

Now, the use of the meme is undisputed, and it is quite an expedient and efficient way to get the joke/reference across in such a cramped space. It's funny, but it wouldn't just be there for humor's sake only.

in any case, we all win!

Dudes, I was just listen to the Nico Nico Douga Medley and I got to the "I can't beat Airman" part and I think I understand why he chose Airman as Ocelot. He mentions E-cans in the song! That's all I can think about.

nerds.
