Column: Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic - 'Welcome to the Pokecollege'

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games.]

Returning to a previously explored subject (Ash from Pokemon's awkward social situations) has brought fruit once more for a colorful Mr. Persona, we see, as he explores the post-watershed years for the master of monsters:

Ash suddenly gained and lost a lot of weight during those college years...

A tale of two similar species that traveled down very different evolutionary paths

EDITOR'S POSTSCRIPT: Well, we're delighted to say that Persona is a) over his Persona 3 comic fixation and b) back in full effect and full color, examining the telling differences between Slimes and Puyos. It's comitragic!

Column: Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic - 'The State of Things'

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by (or posted on behalf of!) Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games.

A little note from Persona this week: "I had a friend do a comic for me this week while I was at Anime Expo selling my comic stuffs. It's about the soon to be released Sonic Unleashed and the sorry state of Sonic. If you want to write up a little info about my friend for the entry, his name is Radrappy and he posts on the Visublog (http://visublog.mechafetus.com) along with the rest of my buddies. His hobbies include crying over what the next Sonic game will be like, while simultaneously having hope and great despair in his heart for the state of Sonic Team." Fair enough!

Column: Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic - 'Welcome to the Persona 3 part 2'

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. This second in a series of two pokes fun at Atlus' cult PS2 RPG Persona 3.]

He actually has head cancer

(SPOILER: Persona explains of this one to me, for those terminally confused - OK, with slight paraphrasing by the GSW editors: "In case you're wondering what this week's comic is about, in Persona 3, one of the main characters, Junpei, is always wearing his hat - even in the hot springs and the beach. This has lead me to assume he has a shiny noggin.")

Column: Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic - 'Welcome to the Persona 3'

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games.]

Aha, this latest GameSetWatch Comic references the Atlus-created cult PS2 title Persona 3, and for those not aware of the general conceit, here's Wikipedia explaining neatly of the RPG:

"The player uses weapons and magical abilities gained by the use of "Personas" to defeat foes in a turn-based combat system. An iconic feature of the game is the method by which the members of SEES release their Personas: by firing an Evoker, a gun-like object, at their head, which does no damage but causes sufficient emotional stress to cause the Persona to appear."

So there. Commenters, explain the other references for the unworthy/insufficiently geeky.

I choose you, Bulbasaur!

Column: Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic - 'Welcome to the Castlevania'

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games.]

This latest GameSetWatch Comic deals with the classic, slightly mangled speechifying of Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night - and presumably what happened in the version we didn't see onscreen. Ouch.

Don't worry, once you go offscreen he should be okay.

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games.]

This time around, Persona takes a look at one of my favorite online games of all time, Sega's Phantasy Star Online, with a particular eye to the treasures like the super-spectacular weapons that may (or may not!) be hidden within the secret item boxes that you bring to the in-game store. Haw.

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games.]

Aha, this time Persona brings us an adorable little tale based on Love & Berry, "... a cross between an arcade game and collectible card game from Sega, targeted toward girls usually between ages six and twelve years." Make them 'dress up & dance', folks. (Also Sega, parody is permissible under one of those Amendments, so please Hammer, don't hurt us!)

I think I put over $40 into this game already...

Following his triumphant comeback comic, Persona again graces us with his 'unique' worldview. This time, it's the classic Mega Man franchise, but seen through a distinctly Kojima-esque lens. Snaaaake!

['Welcome to the GameSetWatch Comic' is, once again, a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about the continuing adventures of our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. He's back!]

The last of the previous run of Persona's GameSetWatch comics ran in October 2006, before it lapsed into extended and much-missed hiatus.

For those who didn't spot it - or were too miseducated to be reading GSW at that time - you neglected such delicacies as bizarre Pokemon pastiches, the misadventures of Shen Mue's Ryo Hazuki, and, of course, the totally disturbing Mario cartoon that should not be named.

In any case, we're delighted to welcome his return with a weekly comic that promises to dwell on the 'Welcome To The...' theme, with this first one taking aim at the... new world of Final Fantasy's evolving business practices in these Wii-tastic times? Bravo, Sir:

COMIC: 'Our Blazing Destiny' - Pokemon Mystery Dungeon & NEW Sonic the Hedgehog

[Our Blazing Destiny is a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. And about mocking classic literature and about new games that spit on my childhood hero and make me cry.]

Here's Persona double-dealing the goods: "Sorry guys, school work is piling up already on me! It's only like the third week of classes and already we're animating things for homework like Thumper from Bambi saying, 'I triple dog dare ya!'. Anyway, to make up for the comic I didn't put up last week, I made two for this entry!

"The first comic deals with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, a Chun Soft mysterious dungeon game where you, a human, has been transformed into a Pokemon and recruit other Pokemon to help you traverse the various randomly generated dungeons. The story and illustrations are pretty cute and I like how the game asks you random questions about your morality that determines your Pokemon persona. They should implement that feature into the actual Pokemon games to determine your starter!"

My name is Gregor.

"This second comic is about the new Sonic the Hedgehog game entitled Sonic the Hedgehog for PS3 and Xbox360. I really like Sonic but the way Sonic Team has been handling his games as of late makes me cry. The slipshod glitches of the new game is harkening back to Adventure 1 falling-through-hoops-and-going-straight-through-the-ground-like mess-ups. Not only that, shouldn't the levels be designed better by now? The on-rails, hopping on to random animals/objects to travel around, running and getting sucker-hit by an enemy you can't see style design still doesn't capture any sense of speed and doesn't even live up to the amazing level design of the original Genesis games. And worst of all: why are the Chao gone? Having a small Tamagotchi-like animal that I could raise on the VMU and plug back into the game was the only reason why I kept going back and playing the games on the Dreamcast!

Anyway, in the recently released Tokyo Game Show trailers for the game, there are snips of FMV segments where Sonic seduces a young princess and carries her off in his arms. This wouldn't be that bad except Sonic positively looks like a guy in an animal mascot suit as he grabs the princess by the hand. It's really creepy. In the trailer they also milk the Sonic 2 ending song, 'Sweet Sweet Sweet' by Dreams Come True, in a 'come on guys, this is SO totally a Sonic game' nod. So basically, the team working on the game is so insecure about this Sonic title that they need to name it after the original game AND use the original song just to get a reaction out of people. It's totally Sonical!"

Fancy having a go at it, Princess?

COMIC: 'Our Blazing Destiny' - Welcome to the Oregon Trail

[Our Blazing Destiny is a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. And about fording rivers and not being able to carry enough food back to the wagon.]

"My classes have started! I'll try to get the comic back on schedule next week so bear with me!

My friend had a copy of The Oregon Trail on her computer and I played it again out of nostalgia. It surprised me how easy it was to get to Oregon now that I was older and was more capable of micromanaging small virtual travellers. Maybe it was harder back when it only in green and black on the Apple II?"

COMIC: 'Our Blazing Destiny' - Tamagotchi!

[Our Blazing Destiny is a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. And about little black and white pixel animals that poop and die.]

Here's Persona to update us on whatever the heck this week's column is about: "Sorry guys, I was really late with this comic! To compensate, it's really, really long!

You see, I went up to the mountains to train with the yaoi priestesses like I mentioned last week, but when I got there they made me pass through thirteen trials in order to gain access to the scroll of all whispy knowledge. I was able to clear the first thirteen or so with no problem but the 'Jam your p****s into a giant bear' trial had me really stumped. I eventually realized something was wrong when all the priestesses kept on giggling when I asked them what a 'p****s' was. It turned out all the priestesses were actually just some furry perverts renting out a shack in the woods with no knowledge at all over the ancient techniques of the whispy lines!!

The whole ordeal left an unsatisfying taste in my mouth so I tied them all up on to the trees surrounding the area and covered them with honey. As I heard the snorts of bears approaching, I ignited the priestesses' temple in the all-erasing flames of justice with an explosive technique I learned from the Great Otter of the South Sea: mix pure water with two parts acorn jelly and dandelion roots and light. As I looked back to the site, a sereneness passed over me and I realized an important lesson: don't check Craig's list for secrets of the ancient arts."

In reality I just had trouble procuring financial aid for my school year.

COMIC: 'Our Blazing Destiny' - Animal Crossing!!

[Our Blazing Destiny is a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. And about lovesick dramas between little super-deformed animal people and little super-deformed people-people.]

This week, Persona's words of wisdom are as follows: "I liked Animal Crossing better on the Gamecube than on the DS for some reason. I think there was something nice about leaving messages behind for a theoretical other player to see, presumably someone that lived in the same house and could access the game anytime. Of course, in my case, there was no other player so I was leaving clues behind for no one, except for occasional asshole friends who would come and chop all my trees down and bury mounds of trash everywhere.

I originally had in mind a more wispy color style for this comic but then soon realized that I didn't really know how to color like that. I think I should go up to the mountains and rededicate myself to learning how to draw wispy lines and delicate colors from women living in rock cabins who draw yaoi doujinshi while fighting bears and eating salmon!"

It is a game about animals and people mating in the forest! Get it??

This week, Persona comments tragically (also, note, this comic is SLIGHTLY NSFW due to swearing fun and bizarre smuttiness!): "My plan to turn this comic into an all Sega comic has failed. Woe! Also, my last few comics have been drawn on an LCD monitor and I'm really noticing that it's ruining the colors on other screens. I'll return to a CRT for the next comic!"

COMIC: 'Our Blazing Destiny' - Pokémon Series

[Our Blazing Destiny is a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. And about the post-monster training reality of a famous red-capped character.]

So, the ever-weirded out Persona has done a little more thinking about the underground world of Game Freak and Nintendo's favorite 'catch 'em all' simulator,, and has come up with the following semi-insanity:

"Thinking back on the world of Pokémon, there's really not that many civilized areas on the map. Each town usually consists of just two houses, a Pokécenter, and a mart. Between them, there's like acres of grassy knolls and dark forests and caves where little monsters linger, waiting to be abducted and brainwashed by elementary school children. Realistically, what kind of career could a person living in this world really find? Running a mart? Becoming a veterinarian? Gambling?

If anything, I assume he's working at Silph Co. He saved the president from Team Rocket attacks when he was a kid afterall. I'm sure he could've used that influence to get himself a nice, cushy job."

"I've been playing Samurai Spirits: Tenkaichi Kenkakuden and my thoughts remained on the dramas of the cute mascot sisters of the Samurai Showdown series: Nakoruru and Rimururu.

COMIC: 'Our Blazing Destiny' - Super Mario Bros!

[Our Blazing Destiny is a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. And about the dramas that happen behind the two-dimensional playfield.]

Here's Persona's info on this week's slightly delayed comic, which is [*WARNING*], vaguely disturbing and ever so slightly NSFW, but hey, Nintendo, don't hurt us: "Sorry this comic took so long! I've been hit by my yearly cold and it's messing me up pretty badly. I hope the colors at least look okay on this comic.

"Anyway, I've been playing the New Super Mario Bros. for the DS lately (thanks to Aderack, Aerisdead, and Thatbox!) and the new mushrooms that either make Mario gigantic or miniscule started me on a track of thinking about all of Mario's past power-ups. Whenever he ingests something, he always has some sort of change in constitution, whether it be a P-balloon, a mushroom, or a metal cap. Not only that, his power ups usually come with a wardrobe change - from raccoon ears and tail, capes, and Hammer Bros. shells to frog suits, statues, and even Kuribo shoes!

Since Persona isn't even ON THE INTERNET right now (omg!), we pass on a salutary message from him, as follows:

"Hello everyone! I'm at Anime Expo right now, selling my wares, becoming one with my people! Preparing for the event took an extremely long amount of time and due to the chaos, all I can offer this time is a sample from my doujinshi this year. The entire comic is devoted to Haruhi Suzumiya, a new anime about a girl who has the power of god but doesn't realize it and all her friends that try to appease her so that she doesn't destroy the world. [Our Blazing Destiny is a weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. And sometimes about hedgehogs that run really, really fast.]

This time round, here's our special Persona explanation of what the heck is going on below: "This comic centers on the wonderful history of Sonic's aural representation. Ever since his first yelps of synthesized asphyxiated pain, Sonic has developed his voice and his appearances for the modern world, showing off his heroism with such choice phrases as 'NOT MY DAY!!', 'LET'S GET 'EM!', 'THAT WAS TIGHT!', and my favorite: 'HEY GUY!!'"

"Following this evolutionary path, my dream for the next Sonic game is to just have Sonic constantly screaming at me in pure Engrish jibberish as he run into walls and consequently clip through the floor to a watery grave. 'OK!' "

[Our Blazing Destiny is a new weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. And a lot of Metal Gear jokes, it seems.]

This week, Persona continues on the tres amusant Metal Gear Solid tip, and here's his explanation of the thought process this time:

"This comic revolves around Liquid and his truly disturbing fixation with 'Outer Heaven.' I mean, what kind of horrible ego-destroying child-raising did Big Boss do that drives Liquid to constantly recreate the relationship of Boss vs. Snake? Liquid's desire to succeed where his father didn't is so intense that not even designer virus-instigated death is enough to stop him! At this rate, the only thing Snake can do to truly stop Liquid is to take Ocelot and throw him entirely into a vat of molten iron, making sure every ounce of his spectre-conducting, mustached body is gone."

"Then Snake would have to jump in himself so that Liquid doesn't do some instant body-transferring from the moment Snake had to grab Ocelot and threw him in. There at the iron factory, Otacon would then sob to himself, whimpering a last 'Can love bloom on a battlefield?' (or a 'Your mother seduced me!') as Old Snake's artificially aged body gets licked by the flames of hot iron, his withered hand giving one last thumbs up to the world." So there!

Oral Fixation.

He'll also be attending Anime Expo this year at the Artist Alley selling a new doujinshi full of game-parodies and random nonsense. Come out and see him!]

COMIC: 'Our Blazing Destiny': Metal Gear Solid 4

[Our Blazing Destiny is a new weekly comic by Jonathan "Persona" Kim about our society, cultural postdialectic theory, and video games. But mostly the latter.]

So, as promised, we have a replacement comic for the saintly Shmorky's strip, and it's from Persona, whose work you may have spotted in The Gamer's Quarter and elsewhere. And here's Persona himself to explain the premier instalment of what we're hoping will be a lovably random enterprise:

"The first 'Our Blazing Destiny' comic features the new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer and all the terrifying Raiden-ness that erodes up from it. I mean, did you see the size of that boy's robo-crotch now? He could take out a Metal Gear with that monster!" Ahem.

Tactical Espionage Urination!

COLUMN: Byebye, Multicart Project!

mpdizzy.gif Well, we're sorry to announce that Dave "Shmorky" Kelly's weekly GSW cartoon strip The Multicart Project, which, you may recall, "detailed the lives of Nintendo Entertainment System characters way past their prime, living in low-income housing and just trying to get by", is no more, having reached the end of its run on GameSetWatch.

At least, we _think_ our relationship is no more, according to what we could decipher of a scribbled note thrown through our window by Mr. Kelly's lawyer Oscar Acosta. All of the previous 8 episodes of the strip are available in archived form, and we will forever love anyone who can make scrambled Dizzy jokes in the same strip as KC Munchkin medical testing gags and Alex Kidd-related racism taunts.

However, all is not lost - we will be starting a brand new comic from a new author next Monday (29th!), and GSW regulars should look out for all kinds of fun from it - or at least, a brief stifled chuckle. We're keeping the identity of our new cartoonist secret for now, mainly because it's not Doonesbury or Charles Schulz - but somebody much, much funnier!
