Ten years after releasing Toki Tori to Game Boy Color, Dutch developer Two Tribes (iOS Swords & Soldiers port) is finally moving on from remaking the colorful platformer on WiiWare/PC/iOS to create a sequel for its lovable chicken mascot.

Toki Tori 2 will release via Steam for Windows/Mac in Spring 2012, and on iOS, Nintendo download services, and other platforms afterward. You can sign up for one of 200 free Steam alpha/development versions by writing the company!

Two Tribes has set up a development blog and revealed that this follow-up will feature no items or weapons, as the team believes "there is only so much what you can do with the current setup of Toki Tori."

"Often times, people would simply request a sequel with more items and weapons and worlds. We thought it was kind of cruel to keep people waiting for ten years and then only release what amounts to a map pack. So we did something else. We went back to the core concept of Toki Tori, and built a unique experience on top of that.

Toki Tori is a pretty lame game character as far as mobility is concerned. Toki Tori’s items and weapons give him possibilities to overcome this, but actually take away possibilities from the player to be creative and original in their approach to the puzzle.

Often, solutions in Toki Tori were achieved by a unique combination of items to be used in exact orders at the exact positions the designers wanted. We think this stopped a lot of people from enjoying the later portions of Toki Tori and that’s why we’ve decided that the game world should offer more possibilities and Toki Tori should have less."
