Lost Levels forumer Johnny Undaunted discovered a Japanese lineup of scheduled Sega Master System releases for 1988 and 1989, revealing a few planned titles that never saw a retail release in any region.
While higher-profile games like Outrun 3D, California Games, and Ultima IV were cancelled in Japan but ultimately released elsewhere (explaining their support for the Japan-exclusive FM sound module), the arcade-ported racer Hot Rod and something called "Wolfman" were never officially released.
What's more, the list indicates that Sega's RPG sequel Phantasy Star II was originally slated as a Sega Master System title. The game would eventually launch for the Sega Genesis in 1989, but it would have made for one hell of a last hurrah for the SMS, which was discontinued in Japan in 1989 following the release of the forgettable Bomber Raid.
