Jake Kaufman -- aka chiptune virtuoso "virt" -- has released the full soundtrack to WayForward's vampiric sidescroller BloodRayne: Betrayal as a free or pay-what-you-want download.

In addition to Betrayal's 17 background music tracks, the album also includes an alternate chiptune soundtrack. Better still, these chiptune tracks are also available as an NES Sound Format file -- they're designed for Konami's VRC6 MMC chip, which was used to create the legendary soundtrack for the Japanese version of Castlevania III.

"I frantically tried to learn FamiTracker and cover each song note-for-note," explains Kaufman. "I imagine most working composers would just have run MIDI files through a 'chiptune-o-matic' converter like GXSCC, rather than creating machine-code-compatible, authentic VRC6 versions. But most working composers probably don't have a death wish, and actually value their time."

Unsurprisingly, the remix tracks sound like they were ripped from a lost 8-bit Castlevania game -- I like them quite a bit! The alternate soundtrack can also be unlocked in-game via a code found in Betrayal's credits.
