It's not easy being buff and sexy in today's hateful Internet world, as Scary Go Round creator John Allison laments in this illustration inspired by Sega's Golden Axe series.

Gamers once embraced the improbable musculature of fantasy artists like Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell (Vallejo actually painted a number of Sega Genesis covers, including Golden Axe II's), but bulging muscles and untamed coiffures have long since been replaced with sterile power armor and gruff baldness. It's comforting to know that Golden Axe's characters remain stubborn in their old, sweaty ways.

Also worth a look: Allison's take on what Pac-Man might have looked like if it was originally released for the Commodore 64.
