Though Nintendo is known for being critical of Apple's App Store, a mobile application featuring characters from its flagship Pokemon franchise is on its way to iOS and Android platforms in Japan.

Pokemon Ie Tap? is a free-to-play card-matching puzzler that challenges players to tap specific Pokemon to the beat of a background music track. The game, set to be released this summer, appears to use characters specific to the most recent generation of Pokemon titles -- sorry, Jigglypuff fans.

As Touch Arcade notes, the game itself is not published by Nintendo, but is instead a spinoff from marketing and licensing affiliate The Pokemon Company. Here's hoping this paves the way for an official iOS Pokedex app -- such a thing could be quite useful!
