Since being acquired by Zynga late last year, Words With Friends developer Newtoy has been hard at work on producing a worthy follow-up to its iOS word game phenomenon. The result, Hanging With Friends, was released in the App Store this week.

While Words With Friends presented a new take on the classic board game Scrabble, Hanging With Friends applies the hit formula to the traditional game of Hangman. As in Words With Friends the main draw of the game is its asynchronous multiplayer gameplay, which allows players to participate in up to 20 games simultaneously with friends or random opponents.

Words With Friends remains one of the most popular iOS releases to date, and it remains to be seen whether Hanging With Friends will be equally successful. A free ad-supported version is also available.
