Nintendo 3DS owners take note: Nintendo updated its eShop this week with the addition of Donkey Kong, a 1994 Game Boy game that you absolutely need to own. No exceptions. Sorry.

If you glossed over the release, assuming that it was just another port of Nintendo's 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong (or, worse, a downgraded port of the NES version of Donkey Kong), be aware that Donkey Kong '94, as it's sometimes called, is a totally different game. The Game Boy Donkey Kong is a lengthy, clever puzzle-platformer that, until this week, was never released on any other platform.

Donkey Kong stands among the few truly great Game Boy games, and it's worth revisiting if you haven't played it lately. One major caveat: the Virtual Console version does not support the Super Game Boy's extended color palette -- a real shame, as Donkey Kong was one of the few games to exploit the hardware's full potential. It's unfortunate that the 3DS version is monochrome-only, but at just $3.99, it's difficult to complain too much.
