While 2K Marin/Australia has turned X-COM into something nearly unrecognizable to series fans, the UFO: The Two Sides project, for the most part, stays true to Julian Gollop's original turn-based strategy title despite its new features and modified elements.
Along with changes to its graphics and user interface, UFO: The Two Sides offers a 1 vs 1 multiplayer mode, rebalanced and reworked tactical combat (e.g. smoke screen is more useful), keyboard shortcuts, small changes to the designed to give the races more combat flavor, and XP/Vista compatibility.
After working on it for more than a year, the team behind UFO: The Two Sides have released a public beta, though you'll need a copy of the original game to play it. As the game's title indicates, you'll eventually be able to play an entire campaign as the aliens (who are playable in multiplayer).

X-Com: UFO Defense is one of the greatest video games ever made, and I'm glad SOMEONE is doing the job of preserving it, since 2K could give a shit less about video games and would switch to selling soup in a second if they found out they'd be making more money.
