Electronic Arts filed three trademarks for "Darkspore" earlier this week, likely a follow-up to 2008's Spore, except darkened in some way (my guess is that EA Maxis is introducing more mature content to the sim like, say, blood/gore, alcohol consumption, and even scenes with partial nudity).
The filings mention "online computer games", "hand held units for playing video games", and "downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices", as well as some non-game applications like playing cards, action figures, board games, and a motion picture film production.
Gaming industry sleuth site Superannuation, which uncovered the trademarks, speculates that this is the "Spore Title TBA" home console/PC in project mentioned in Electronic Arts's Third Quarter Fiscal Year 2010 Results report last February. That project was listed for a Q4 Fiscal Year (ending March 31st) release alongside several other unannounced titles.
