GameSetLinks: What A Freakin' Knightmare

[GameSetLinks is GameSetWatch's daily link round-up post, culling from hundreds of weblogs and outlets to compile the most interesting longform writing, links, and criticism on the art and culture of video games.]

Continuing with the fun and games that is GameSetLinks, we're starting out with Richard Cobbett's look back at the fun that was UK game show Knightmare, something that's pretty beloved of many British folks, growing up, and in no way holds up at all twenty years later, of course.

Other neat things in here - Mega64 messing with GameStop employees over Halo 3: ODST and its hunting game tie-in, a discussion of the UK Guardian's crowdsourcing and its game-like elements, indie music promotion and how it might relate to games, and lots more.

Tues day day:

Richard Cobbett > Richard's Online Journal > Remembering Knightmare
One of the highlights of my TV childhood in the UK, and Mr. Cobbett does a great job of digging into it - a TV show that's a weird fantasy game, for those wondering.

Topspin Media » The Fanfarlo Four Step…
Specifically about an indie band, but guess what, digital promotion works similarly, whatever...

Ian Bogost - Art on Spec
'A website that helps turn anybody into an arts patron is a lovely idea, and I want to embrace the idea of Kickstarter. But instead, I can only muster an ambiguous sense of self-loathing over the idea of art being fundable on spec in the first place.' Curmudgeon alert :P

Original Sound Version » Blog Archive » Cutting Into Jason Cox: XOC Interview
I first spotted XOC cos I'm an admin at Archive.org and saw his SMW album when he released it. Anyhow... his amazing multi-instrumental takes on classic game music are unmissable.

YouTube - Mega64: HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY BUNGIE!!!
LTTP on this one, but makes me intensely happy, as only Mega64 can: 'THEY DID IT AGAIN. BUNGIE IS RELEASING HALO OSTD ON THE SAME DAY AS OUR GAME CABELA'S BIG GAME HUNTER 2010. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE JOKE'.

EASY: The Guardian's Crowdsource Game - News Games: Georgia Tech Journalism & Games Project
'By borrowing from the leveling convention of video games, such an application might offer the reader a chance to "level up," attaining access to ever more complex information or categorization schemes as progressive levels of competency are established.'
