Demovibes is a compilation of some of the best music that the demoscene has to offer.

Having just released its ninth volume, this series is an essential guide that reminds us just how far demoscene music has progressed beyond the bleepy Jean Michel Jarre covers you would have heard back in the '80s and early '90s.

These collections aren't just for a demoscene audience either. As Willbe, the author, states himself: "It's not a chiptune or J-Pop style compilation. We surely speak about quality electronic music, the same kind you're desperately seeking at your retail records store."

Volume 9 in the series, released last week, takes 24 tracks from the last couple of years and pits them against one another in a flawless 80 minute mix. The trip starts off with a mash-up of two of the biggest demos from last year: Booze Design's Edge of Disgrace on the C64 and Orb & Andromeda's massive PC hit, Stargazer.

It's interesting to note how the soundtracks from 4k and 64k intros sit comfortably alongside those from full-sized demos like the recent blockbuster Frameranger by Fairlight. This shows just how far the intro coders have been pushing their audio technologies recently. (And remember to check the accompanying tracklists for links to the original demos.)
