October 5, 2009 12:00 AM | Simon Carless
As another weekend winds to the end, it's time to go through the top full-length features of the past week on big sister site Gamasutra, in both feature and news form, plus some GameCareerGuide features du jour.
And there's some smart stuff in here, once again - including interviews with a BioWare doctor and the Western NCSoft folks behind Aion's debut over here, plus an already much-discussed opinion piece on why there should be a 'Game Developer's Guild', and a new GCG Design Challenge, appearing alongside a couple of newbie-relevant features.
Here's the full line-up:
The Complexities Of Launching Aion
"With news that Aion had reached 400,000 preorders in the West, the NCSoft-created game has outpaced the majority of MMO imports. What lead to this success? Gamasutra discussed process and philosophy with Brian Knox, who works out of NCsoft's Seattle studio as a producer on the game."
A View Toward a Game Developers Guild
Does the world need a 'Game Developers Guild', as other entertainment media have? What would one look like? This in-depth Gamasutra opinion piece by Tim Carter examines the underlying issues, as well as the discipline-specific dangers."
Game Audio Contracts
"Contracting audio designers and directors lets developers and publishers get all the quality of professionals at less expense -- we look inside the crucial game audio contract for both sides."
The Designer's Notebook: How to Write Sports Commentary
"Sports commentary is an essential part of the viewing experience -- thus core to the sports game genre in the video game industry too. Madden veteran and Gamasutra columnist Ernest Adams looks at the best ways to plan and write commentary for sports games."
Building Experiences The BioWare Way: Greg Zeschuk Speaks
"As BioWare finishes up Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age, Gamasutra sits down with co-founder Greg Zeschuk to discuss BioWare's design and iteration process, the "leap of faith" of making vast swathes of content many players might never see, and why the company is keeping a close eye on the increasingly successful social gaming scene."
GCG: Game Design Challenge: Literary Inspirations
"Our latest GameCareerGuide Game Design Challenge, inspired by Electronic Arts' Dante's Inferno, asks players to adapt a literary work into the premise and world for a new video game."
GCG: A Day in the Life: Three Slices of Life from the Front Lines of Game Development
