GameSetQ: The Unpurchased, The Unopened - Confess!

- Keeping up the random GameSetQs, it's confession time for all you penitent GameSetWatch readers. As you might have spotted, the past couple of months have brought a veritable whirlwind of quality game titles - for the DS, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 2, and augh, too much interactive entertainment to process. And there's niggling lust and caution underlying that mass of games.

Not so carefully analyzing, I've come to the conclusion that there are two types of games that are making us feel guilty right now - the games that we should have bought, but haven't got round to yet, and those that we picked up, but haven't even booted up yet. Let's call them The Unpurchased and The Unopened, eh?

So, my confession - The Unpurchased for me includes both Super Mario Galaxy and Link's Crossbow Training, both of which I intend to pick up as soon as humanly possible, but I just haven't got to yet. Sorry, Reggie. As for The Unopened, the prime culprit for me is Uncharted, which has got buried under a mass of titles - but DDR Hottest Party and Scene It? are also in that bucket right now.

And shazam, I give the floor to you, mes petits chou-fleurs. What games constitute The Unpurchased and The Unopened for you, in the year of the Minter 2007? Extra marks for admitting the embarrassing, but the pedestrian will also suffice, naturally.

Comments

I only have a Nintendo DS, so a lot of unpurchased. Front Mission and Orcs & Elves for DS are on my Amazon list right now. As for unopened, I have Final Fantasy IV for GBA and Phantom Hourglass for DS (possibly because I am with Puzzle Quest and Picross DS).

And I would add unfinished: Sword of Mana (chars of around level 60 but still hasn't finished the game), Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Lunar Dragon Song (played it for like 10 minutes), Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (maybe an hour into the game), Metroid: Prime Hunters (almost finished it), Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime (ugh), and a few others.

Funny, I haven't cracked open Link's Crossbow Training either. It looks fun, but it doesn't induce the kind of curiosity and fascination that a giant, violent plastic toy should.

Going unpurchased is the Phantom Hourglass, although it's been recommended to me.

Unopened is Medieval Total War 2, only got it last week and have been playing Rome Total War at the moment.

Also unpurchased is Call of Duty 4, again recommended (despite the short singleplayer).

I should have probably picked up Zelda DS by now given my history with the series, but the game left a bad impression on me back at E3. Crossbow Training doesn't excite me either at the moment.

I'm better than I used to be about Unopened games. The only Unopened game I have left is actually from last year. Yup, it's a vintage 2006 Red Steel still in plastic wrap. Shall we start the bidding at, say, $1 million?

Oddly enough, I also haven't been tempted by Phantom Hourglass. Clearly there is something wrong with me.

Dwarf Fortress continues to confound my ability to play Super Mario Galaxy, which isn't unopened, but might as well be since I've played it for only an hour.

As for unpurchased, I am ashamed to say I did not get Metroid Wii on the day it came out. In the past, I've bought whole consoles for Metroid games.

The double pack of American McGee's Alice and Clive Barker's Undying has been sitting unopened on my shelf for YEARS now. And I've had an unopened copy of Mega Man Collection for the XBox sitting in my shelf for about a year and a half.

This post reminds me of a story from college. During a work meeting to schedule our hours for the upcoming semester, a couple of friends were talking about the Might and Magic series. One of them asked the other if he'd played Might and Magic III, and he replied that he'd bought it, but he hadn't opened it yet. A third friend exclaimed "You own it but you've never played it?" and the first friend responded "Yeah. Kinda like your mom." And the entire room of 30+ people burst out laughing.

It was a magical moment.

I think this time of year having a slate of unpurchased games is a forgivable sin. There are just too many. I for example have yet to pick up:

Phoenix Wright 3
Mass Effect
Assassin's Creed
Contra 4 (!!)
Guitar Hero 3
Rock Band
Castlevania Chronicles
Link's Crossbow Training
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles
All them great PS3 games (I don't have one yet)

As for unopened, it's sad to say that I foolishly bought a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics PSP and it's been sitting on my desk unopened for weeks. I still haven't beaten Jeanne D'Arc so I don't know when I'll get to it.

Phantom Hourglass and Front Mission on DS are both sitting unopened for me, as I live out the excitement of HD gaming for the first time with PS3 titles like Uncharted. THEY SO PRETTY.

I am looking forward to starting up Front Mission though, it was the only strategy RPG I could ever get into.

Oh god, and I just realised Mario Galaxy is released today in Australia. Chalk up another forthcoming unopened title. Sorry, Nintendo.

Unpurchased: Call of Duty 4, after the price in Australia arbitrarily doubled overnight.

Unopened: The Nintendo DS double-pack of Transformers games my wife bought me for my birthday, with the best of intentions.

Funnily enough, I was just discussing the third leg of the gaming disgrace stool: Unfinished games on my blog the other day.

Unpurchased:

Call of Duty 4.

Would also really like Mass Effect but I only have a PC.

Unopened:

STALKER - I started playing, upgraded to 1.03 patch because it was pretty bad without it. Then after upgrading realised the patch broke saved games. Lost all motivation.

Portal - I completed the normal game, but still have nearly all the advanced section of the game to complete.

Ahhh yes, the shrinkwrap shine. Mine has grown a bit this year. This year alone:
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Mercury Meltdown Revolution
Viva Pinata
Odin Sphere
Raiden III
Lumines Plus
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Gitaroo Man

Hi. I'm Mike and I have a problem.

Er, that should be "shrinkwrap shrine".

All credit to the coining of that term should go to "Randomly Generated"

Lots unpurchased for me right now. Ah well.
