GSW Note: Anyone Had Trouble With Comment Posting?
May 20, 2007 10:31 AM | Simon Carless
Just wanted to check in - has anyone had issues with posting comments to GameSetWatch in the last couple of weeks? I just happen to have posted a comment that got filtered as junk for some random reason, and I went and grabbed it out of our 'Junk Spam' directory, but that makes me a little concerned.
Right now, we're using Akismet on top of a MovableType install, but honestly, we're probably one of the largest game blogs still allowing anonymous comments without login, due to the ridiculous amounts of comment spam out there - looks like GSW is getting about 1,500 spam comments per day right now, youch.
Anyhow, comment below, or if that gets spam filtered (hah!), mail us at editors at gamesetwatch.com, and tell us when your comment did or didn't get posted. Also, suggestions below on possible solutions are welcome - should we add a CAPTCHA? We could even use TypeKey with forced login, but I don't think that's too popular.
In the longer term, we're moving toward single sign-on across all CMP Game Group sites/events, so we might be able to tie that in to commenting here - which would be the best and coolest, but won't happen for a while.

You could zap all comment spam with a simple custom captcha. Have a question like "Fill in the blank Game___Watch:", and require people type in "Set". Automation fails, humans win!

I've gotten comments blocked before when I didn't enter my email address.

I haven't had any problems posting here, but darn near every one of my comments posted on Namakoteam gets filtered as spam and it makes me go all :'(

I've had my comments filtered too whenever I didn't enter email... and even when I did. Actually 2 out of 3 comments never got posted.
But I figured it was because the moderators were uppity.
:p

Better captcha: prove that you're human by telling us if you cried at the ending of the Futurama episode with Fry's dog.
On the other hand, the irony of asking people via comments if they're not able to comment is... actually completely spoiled via the problem being an overzealous spam filter. So now no-one else can bring it up.

I haven't noticed any of my comments getting filtered out... But I don't comment here religiously, so... Yeah.

Yes, when I was posting a link to the Techcrunch article on Flektor getting accuired, the site kept going really slow and timing out, so I kept resubmitting. However after the 3rd resubmit I get a "too many comments" error, only to go back and see the first two timeouts actually had accepted the comments.
Let's hope this one makes it through
