Much Ado About Nothing: The Fate of E3
To a flurry of furious blog posts web-wide, Next-Gen reported Sunday that the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, would be shutting its doors for good. From the article:
"Well placed sources say the news that larger exhibitors were pulling out had prompted urgent meetings among publishing executives. They decided that, without the support of the larger software publishers and hardware manufacturers, there would be no point in continuing."
Hot on the heels of this announcement came GameSpot's follow-up, which took a less alarmist tone, stating that the ESA "will announce changes to the format and scale" of E3 sometime on Monday.
Finally, Ars Technica rebuffed both stories with one of their own, citing sources close to the ESA which told them that while "major changes" are at work, they will fundamentally deal with media access to the show and other similar concerns. In the article, Ars Technica also accuses Next Gen of hoping "they would blow the lid off of a hot story by revealing that the show had been cancelled, but some quick fact checking shows that they are simply incorrect."
While none of the articles explicitly mention their sources by name, one fact is clear: Monday ought to bring big news for E3.
