Game Testing's Incredulous Road To Riches?
We spotted one of the regular Google text ads to appear alongside GSW was advertising 'game testing for fun and profit', essentially ("Get Paid $9-$80 An Hour To Play Games, Only $34.95 Money Back Grnt"), so we clicked through to find the Game Tester Guide website, with some startling revelations.
The site is run by one 'Alex Lum', who states confidently in the intro: "I am a full-time video game tester. I have been a video game tester for various Game Developers for 4 Years now and I love it. I know that it can be difficult to find a video game testing job, because I have been there. How does a guaranteed video game testing job sound?"
It appears that, in Alex's world, developers mail out pre-release copies of their game to random people, who play it for 4 hours, return it (without pirating it all over the Interweb) and get $260.
Well, the concept of broad, brief focus testing, but when Alex claims: "You can Make anywhere around $9 to $80 an Hour, right now I make about $75 an Hour", we tend to exhibit a little - skepticism. Most full-time game testers we know make $10-15 per hour, and that's for hard 8-hour per day slogs through broken, possibly not fun software that they have to play for weeks at a time. It's a great way up the ladder, and it can be fun under certain circumstances, but.. as a get rich quick scheme? Not so much. Still, we reserve judgement until someone pays the $34.95 and tells us what the hell they get in exchange.

Comments
My favorite part of this guy's web site is the questionnaire he supposedly had to fill out in exchange for his sackful of cash. Sure, answers to those questions are valuable to a game developer, but we generally ask them of focus group participants - and those guys certainly aren't making $80 an hour.
If you're thinking about being a game tester, you're going to fill out some paperwork, yeah, but it's going to be a hell of a lot more detailed than the crap on this web site.

Game Testers Guide is a huge rip off, anyone who is thinking of participating in this will be ripped-off, I paid the shipping with my credit card and having got anything in the mail yet, when i recieved my credit card bill it showed that the money was taken but the 1800 number next to it was fake, I tell you what people if i found these motherfuckers (excuse my French) i will personally fuck clean over them and that bitch Alex Lum who ever that fuck he is, i know he's in Chi-town, but let me find out his exact location I gonna smash ( new orleans slang for kill) his bitch ass. BELIEVE THAT

Hello, everyone I'm glad that I found a website to expose the fake Alex Lum for trying to scam people, I agree with Dejonal and Barbarino (weird names) Game Testers Guide is fake and they use this guy Alex to lure people into doing this, that's why they send him checks, for scamming people, for God's sake get a real job or at least a hobby, them marks trying to scam people. The worst thing to pay is the shipping with a credit card the may take more money every month i was smart enough to pay with a money order but I was dumb enough to believe this will work, I tell you now folks not to quit your day job.

total bull. notice how they "BLACKED OUT" the game name because there is now game. surverys wodul ebe much more complicated, and yes, games thta require testing are usually in alpha and beta stages and arent that fun to play.
oh and scroll to the bottom of the page, ALL THE WAY. ;)

Last night my neighbors daughter asked me about this website. My first instincts were that it was fake. Then I took an in-depth look at the site to see what I could find to prove my point without paying.
I read the comments from the so-called testers on his page. The last one is a kid from Redlands, CA stating he is 15 and went to Jefferson High School. I just called the Redlands school board, there is no high school with that name in their, or surrounding districts.
It's a scam folks, don't waste your money.

How can you fall for some one asking you for money, so you can make more money. There is this great lesson that everyone should know in life. If it sounds to good to be true, then it most likely is not. The guy is FOS and i feel bad for the people who actually gave him money.
Posted by: Joe | July 25, 2006 8:15 AM
Thank you for the heads up.
I was just looking for a way to make extra money when this email was sent to me for "The Game Tester Guide". I thought "PERFECT". I am glad I did some research before I sent in any money. Thanks again.
Posted by: LYDIA | July 25, 2006 1:46 PM
There was a craigslist posting advertising for video game testers and after a week, they sent the e-mail link to the "get paid to play video games" site. thanks for the heads-up. It did seem a little suspicious...
Posted by: Q | July 26, 2006 7:29 PM
I just found out about this while I was looking up some history on games (FF tactics) and decided to look in to it and its a damn good thing I came accross this page :) I wanted to share, that when something like this comes out, call the companies that are "having the games be tested" and ask them if they have a deal with this co. if they do most likely its legit. if not the scam company will most likely get in trouble with the game developer company that they say is providing the games.
Posted by: Greg | July 27, 2006 11:49 AM
Yea I was skeptical but I have been trying to get a job in Game testing for a long time, I heard that it was a great first step to get into the Game development field of work. If anyone has any suggestions on how I could get a job, i would be really grateful.
Posted by: AeroDontoro | August 6, 2006 6:12 PM
Guys there is a couple of things to spot a scam in the internet.
1.If it sounds to good to be true its not, its bullshit
2.If the person claims to do the job they are offering full time is bullshit
3.If you think the salary they are claiming to get you is too high its prolly bullshit
4.This is a really important one, if the person is offering memberships or other stuff to you for free if u buy their product it is 100% Grade A baby-back BULLSHIT.
5.If they guarantee a Job then you know is Bullshit.
6.If they want you to send them money to help you get money then you know its bullshit
7. If they tell you you can make lots of money doing a really "easy" and "fun" job without much effort its prolly bullshit.
8. And finally if they tell you to beware of Scams offering the same thing then you can be pretty sure they are the scamers and they are just trying to make you feel safe. Bullshit is not safe.
I have delt with scam "artists" before and i thought i should share what i know, i hope these guidelines can help u guys keep out of other scams.
Good Luck
P.S.
9. if the websites are in long verticle format there is a pretty good chance they are scam and thus, Bullshit.
P.S.S. if anyone finds this usefull and helps them not fall into a Scam post it that way i'll know i helped someone and didn't waste my time writing this lol.
Posted by: James | August 7, 2006 8:06 PM
I remembered one last Guideline
10. If the person offering what they are offering tells you that it is a limited offer and that you are lucky to even be able to buy it or that you have been choosen(this last one applies to Regular mail or E-mail scams) its Pure Refined Bullshit.
Posted by: James | August 7, 2006 8:16 PM
FUCK! I just fell for it just about 5 minutes ago. I looked up his name and found this. I feel like a tool. I sent for my refund through clickbank, (thats who he works through) if that doesnt work, oh well. SHIT! This really fucking sucks. I wonder how many people he scammed.
Posted by: Tetsuo88 | August 8, 2006 1:57 PM
Shouldn't this be shut down by now?
Posted by: Vincent | August 13, 2006 5:07 PM
I don't know if this is a scam or not, but I don't think it is. I joined about a month ago. I didn't get a job. They said all the positions were filled up. So they gave me a refund. I don't know why they would give me a refund if it was a scam. Anyway, thats just my 2 cents.

where is this website because i found one similar www.videogametester.com but it doesnt have anything about this guy whos behind it
Posted by: curran | September 11, 2006 7:14 PM
I responded via email to a classified on a job site that was asking for experienced players and or testers. I responded out of curiosity because it seemed that possibly it could be real. In response Ireceived this email from someone named "Tad":
"To prospective game tester:
Hello and welcome. My name is Tad, I and would like
introduce you to one of the ONLY opportunities to be
paid to play video games. We are one of maybe
2 or 3 similar companies in our field, because its
simply so hard to get reliable testers who give honest
feedback and wont just run off with all of our beta or
unreleased xbox, ps2, psp, nintendo, etc; games....all
which can be expensive & time consuming. WE ARE
LOOKING FOR HONEST WORKERS...WHO WILL RETURN OUR WORK.
You will be able to make an amazing collection of
unreleased games in a matter of no time (i have 100s
of x box games) on top of being paid. The only games
that must be returned are ones that are requested back
by the maker, (which means the game probably wont be
released).
If you think you are qualified, and are at least 15
years of age or older...I invite you to apply at. -
VGTESTER.COM
After you look it over, you can even google up -
gametesterguide is the highest ranked, google
sponsored link, you can also find reviews about our
website from there. We are also clickbank approved.
(an online standard for thousands of internet
businesses) So you can trust us!
Our service is excellent towards our testers and game
makers, and we are investing our money to make an
almost IMPOSSIBLE idea like this work. The reason WE
can do this is because the game companies I work with
trust my company with their newly released products.
(which can be dangerous if a new innovative game is
coming out) We hold their products to extreme secrecy
until they are finally released, and our testers
should too. This program is here for everyone, and has
given a lot of chances to the right people. On top all
the gaming material, we provide you with information
about real video game companies, and the correct
contact info to get a shot a working for them. I was
in those shoes at one point, and got my big break from
someone...so its all gotta start somewhere! We also
will supply you with free access to freegamedownloadz
, because we need you to be able to compare with ANY
POSSIBLE game in the past. (which they have)
If you feel that this program is for you, all sign up
info is on the website. (we are not web design pro's,
so neither is our website) Again, please don't use
this as a way to collect new, unreleased games...but
as a way to give your feedback before the game comes
out. This program won't continue to work unless
everyone works together. Thanks and good luck!
Tad Bowers
VGTester.com"
So there you have it. The same scam. The site is located at http://vgtester.com/
and the site design (or lack there of) should be the final nail in the coffin. If someone was successful at this venture, my god, they should really build a nicer site! Talk about adding insult to injury...

Anybody who buys something through Clickbank and complains they can't get a refund is a fool.
This game tester's guide has credit card processing through the 3rd party processor Clickbank. Clickbank, a very reputable multi-million dollar company, will give you a refund if you just ASK. They sell thousands of products from thousands of different authors/software developers.
Here's their contact form: http://www.clickbank.com/csinquiry.html
I am not affiliated with Lumco or their game guide in any way. I'm just sick of whiners on the Web. Ask for a refund if you don't like the product.
Posted by: Devil's Advocate | October 29, 2006 8:21 AM
Just because you are not happy with a product, doesn't make it a scam.
-my 2 cents.

I was considering to be a part of this part time gaming thing and now after reading this im glad I didn't. I was also told by someone that this fucken skumbag Alex Lum (which probably isn't his real name) is robbing people who actually believe this to be true. I hope someone finds him cuts his dick off and feeds it to him for scamming so many people. I never got scammed on this Thank God but I feel bad for all the other gamers out there who actually paid money for this.
Posted by: Jimmy | November 27, 2006 12:08 AM
People should sign up with http://www.only4gamers.com just to check it out - because they offer a 56 day guarantee, so someone here could signup, check out the program for a week of so and give us some info on it, the ask for a refund.
It's lucky I don't have a credit card cause I'd fall for most of these.
The only problem is, even though they say they'll give you a refund - you can never be sure. Although I'm sure clickbank would refund you asap cause they manage the transactions and they don't want to get into sh*t.
All the people that have got scammed, ASK FOR A REFUND!! It's the only way to bring these guys down, if lots of people ask clickbank for refunds - clickbank will be forced to shut off their credit card processing for that site.

I'm sorry to pop in on this thread, but I'm currently researching this scam, trying to figure out where people are getting false information. I run a site (I won't post it here, so you don't think I'm spamming, but it is in my sig, for reference,) about game development and I've gotten an email from a guy who paid for something that sounds like this. He said the packet of info he got (might have just been an email, for all I know) told him to go to my website for all the information on open tester positions! Gah!
Of course, I'm not getting a cut off of whatever sales there are... and I don't even post tester positions, so I'm now struggling to make sure people don't think I'm involved somehow.
Anyway, I'll try to come back here and check replies, but this thread is pretty old. I'm just posting here to hopefully ward off people about this type of thing.
There are many "headhunter" agencies around the country that work with game development companies to help them find talent, including testers... try looking in that direction. Also, go to game developer sites that post jobs, like Gamasutra.com, for instance.
Ugh.. I hope I don't get any more angry people sent my way by a scammer. :(
Regards,
Hoza

I dunno It always seems that Ill never reach that goal to test video games, Ive always wanted to be part of something big but ppl out there scamming others or just being manipulative to take others cash, it just disapoints me in so many ways. were ALL gamers in this ever growing community we should be profesinal about this cuz if we want ppl to take us serious, then we have to show how committed we are to our games. Tell me u dont feel great when you hAVE BEATEN a game, knowing urself if u knew someoe else playing it wouldnt u help them out if they needed it? Its that level of pride that we all show.

I mean all of these sights are bogus bullshyte. Why pay to get paid? I have been scammed multiple times... I know it was my own stupidity, but the point is, the one thing I think might be legit... I find out is nothing but a friggin sacam too. I love playing games and now it seems yet another dream is being shot down. What is a girl supposed to do? Note the sarcasm!!! Oh well, keep on tredding and maybe I'll find a way. I will not let this bump in the road stop me from becoming a game tester, but some nice info would help me along the way *hint hint*... ;)
Posted by: Ivory | April 10, 2007 3:29 AM
i believe you would have to be invited to test a game and it would only be for like over a 3 day period probably wouldn't get paid but if you did it wouldn't be much unless your a famous celebraty.

I'm looking for someone who lives in the Minneapolis-St Paul area. If you have paid money trying to be a video game tester on one of these sites, I would love to hear from you by Tuesday, May 8th. Thank you, Jacqueline McLean, Fox 9 News 952/946-5616

I can't believe that site hasn't been shut down yet. I work in the games industry (not as a tester). Testing is not a great job but its a way in. It pays better than stacking shelves, but not a lot. It can be more fun but frequently it sin't. However, if you want a job testing games then go on to games developer's websites and apply for the testing jobs that you will advertised there.

No, Pooky isn't my real name but can never be to careful. I was wondering is there any real way to get a job as a remote game tester or even as a game tester w/out going through some site or something? Also, is game-testers.com or gametesterground a scam, cuz i've been receiving e-mails from a guy named "Lou" and he seems legit because he sends updates about job openings in different companies and I haven't even joined his membership yet. Also I've e-mailed him and he responded back with some helpful things. If anyone has some real legit info on how to become a gametester with any scams or money to pay out I'd be really appreciative. Thank-you.

Thanks for the heads-up. They posted on Cragslist and I responded to them. I figured it was garbage since they didn't even say where the position was located, or anything actually specific. But at least you guys have confirmed that this guy is one hell of a fucking piece of shit.
Thanks!
